Polynesian art

During the festivities of the 30th anniversary of the self-governing status of French Polynesia, traditional arts and crafts will be honoured. A gathering with arts and crafts people from the five island groups of French Polynesia will be set up on the Aorai Tini Hau site in Pirae from 21 June to 14 July 2014.

That event, supported by the Ministry responsible for Arts and Crafts and the Department for traditional arts and crafts, is organised by a grouping of committees, federations and associations.

  • This grouping consists of the arts and craft people of or from:

  • “Tahiti i te Rima Rau” committtee

  • Organising committee of arts and crafts exhibitions in the Austral Islands

  • Arts and crafts Committee from Tuamotu-Gambier Te mata keinanga

  • “Bijouterie d’art Polynésien” association

  • “Te Rara’a” association

  • “Papa Oa” federation

  • “Faa’a I Te Rima Ve’ave’a” federation

  • “To’u rima o to’u ia ora” federation

  • Te ono nui federation,

  • Te Tuhuka e te henua enana federation,


About 400 exhibitors are getting ready for this event and come especially from the five archipelagos of French Polynesia:

  • Marqusesas: Nuku Hiva, Ua Pou , Ua Huka, Tahutata, Hiva Oa and Fatu Hiva,

  • Australes: Rurutu, Raivavae, Rimatara, Tubuai and Rapa

  • Leeward islands: Raiatea, Tahaa, Huahine and Maupiti,

  • Tuamotu Gambier: Rikitea, Napuka, Ahe, Fakarava, Hao, Reao, Takaroa, Tatakoto, Nukutavake, Rangiroa, Fangatau, Kauehi, Pukarua, Vahitahi, Makemo, Ana’a, Puka Puka and Kaukura

  • Windward islands: Papeete, Pirae, Arue, Mahina, Hitia’a O tera, Faaa, Punaauia, Paea, Papara, Teva i uta, Taravao, Taiarapu East /West and Moorea.


During the 24 days of the exhibition, demonstrations of know-how, culinary art, songs and dances, shows will be proposed. They will unveil the creativity and specificities in the outer islands arts and crafts, both in the raw materials used and in the products made.

A contest for the most beautiful products created prior to the event by the five archipelagos is presented as the showcase of Polynesian Art and will be on exhibition during the whole time of the event. This challenge will be rewarded by the President’s Award.

During the fair, traditional massage sessions are planned for those who need to get in shape or simply relax while the more daring may get tattooed.

The official inauguration ceremony is scheduled on Saturday 21 June 2014 at 10h00 at Aorai Tinihau Venue, in Pirae.

  • The fair is open to the public from Mondays to Sundays, from 9h00 to 18h00

  • Open in the evening from 9h to 20h: on 21 June 2014 for the Festival of Music and on 5 July 2014 for the cultural presentation of the Marquesas Islands.

  • Each Sunday, a religious service from different religions is scheduled at 8h00
